Northwestern Supplemental Essay: Why Northwestern? (transfer) | Nadine

Why Northwestern?

Northwestern has been it for me for as long as I can remember. Listening to friends and relatives gush about the best years of their lives, all thanks to football games at Ryan Field, winter break ski trips in Colorado, and days spent on the Lakefill, only made it clearer that Northwestern is the school for me. My resulting aspiration to attend is no consequence of romanticized college experiences, however, but a true reflection of Northwestern’s suitability for me, and vice versa. The quarter system’s flexibility is a unique facet of Northwestern education, one that would suit the array of interests I am currently juggling. In broadening my academic horizons this year, I have discovered my Neoplatonic heart, Cartesian mind, and curious soul. By taking more courses than I could at a semester school, I would be able to pursue a true interdisciplinary education by combining economics, politics, and philosophy.

Though academics are a large part of my ‘why,’ I know that time at university is spent outside of the classroom more often than inside of it. While every school is praised for its community, none of them host Dance Marathon with the same level of student engagement and effort as Northwestern. Dance Marathon is an indicator of Northwestern’s larger student body, one that will surround me with students whose primary goal isn’t to obtain a degree, but to emerge as educated and active contributors to society who inspire others to do the same.

At the end of the day, I can write pages of reasons why, but it ultimately boils down to a few, simple things. To be completely straightforward, Northwestern has been a lifelong dream – it’s students are inspiring and influential, it’s academics are renowned, and it holds a legacy I would be honored to keep aflame.
